Saxony is a federal state (Freistaat) in eastern Germany. Historically, the region has appeared in mineralogical literature under various political forms, including the Electorate and Kingdom of Saxony, reflecting changes in governance prior to German unification. These historical names frequently appear on older specimen labels.

Geologically, Saxony lies largely within the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) and adjacent geological units, characterised by Precambrian to Palaeozoic metamorphic rocks intruded by Variscan granites. This geological framework has hosted extensive hydrothermal mineralisation.

Saxony has a long and influential mining history, particularly for silver, tin, cobalt, and uranium. The Freiberg mining district is among the most historically important in Europe, and Saxony as a whole is notable for classic mineral localities documented extensively in early mineralogical literature. The region is administratively subdivided into districts and independent cities.

Description: Allanite-(Y) was first described in 1844 as "bodenite" from Boden, an area where limestone and iron ore were extracted from marbles and skarns. The "bodenite" occurred as acicular crystals embedded in plagioclase feldspar. Breithaupt (1844) describes the crystals as seemingly black, but brownish to smoke colored in thin splinters, and up to “1 Linie breiten und bis 1 Zoll langen Säulen” (approximately 0.6 by 26 mm).
