Named by Johan Friedrich August Breithaupt in 1837 from the Greek 'ουν' "syn" ("together") and 'πλησιαζειν' "plisiazein" ("to bring"), i.e. 'to bring together' because of its relationship with other minerals.
Dimorph of:
Isostructural with:
Symplesite Group.
May be intergrown with its dimorph parasymplesite.

The Fe2+ may oxidise to a significant degree to Fe3+ (see ferrisymplesite) with an accompanying change in colour and optical properties analogous to vivianite.
