From the French "nacre" (mother of pearl) alluding to its lustre.
de Ligny and Navrotsky (1999) showed that kaolinite is the thermodynamically stable phase and the polymorphs dickite, halloysite and nacrite are metastable phases mainly crystallising due to kinetic reasons.
