Named after Gerhard Dreyer (23 June 1944, Landstuhl, Germany - 31 August 1978), Assistant Professor, Johannes Guterberg University, Mainz, Germany, who discovered the mineral.

The tetragonal polymorph of Pucherite and Clinobisvanite. The rarest of the three polymorphs of BiVO4.
