A German term, translating to Iron Quartz. "Kiesel" was originally a term for quartz, but has changed meaning over time. In today's use, the word mostly refers to a pebble. On the other hand, silicic acid is still called "Kieselsäure" in German, because it is derived from quartz as its anhydride.
A quartz that is coloured red, orange, or brown by hematite inclusions. Translucent to almost opaque.
The term "eisenkiesel" is sometimes also used in a wider sense, as a synonym of ferruginous quartz, for any quartz with iron oxides and hydroxide mineral inclusions (hematite, limonite) that is yellow, olive, orange, or brown.
