Named for its relation to bastnäsite. The root name is for the locality at the Bastnäs mines, Riddarhyttan, Skinnskatteberg, Västmanland, Sweden. The "hydroxyl" prefix due to the dominance of the hydroxyl radical over fluorine and the "-(Ce)" suffix due to the dominance of cerium in the composition.
