The name reflects its composition: antimony (Latin = "STIBium") and ARSENic.
First recognized by P. E. Wretblad on samples found in 1935 by Dr. Olof Ödman of the Boliden Gruvaktiebolag from Varuträsk LCT pegmatite, Skellefteå, Västerbotten, Sweden.
Previously regarded as a variety of "allemontite" (= synonym of stibarsen).
