Named by Andrew Cowper Lawson in 1893 for Joseph Paxson Iddings [January 21, 1857 Baltimore, Maryland - September 8, 1920]. He was with the United States Geological Survey and later professor at the University of Chicago. He was one of the great petrologists of his era.
