First described by Cronstedt (1751) as "tungsten". Named by Hisinger & Berzelius (1804) as cerite, after the dwarf planet Ceres discovered by the Italian astronomer Guiseppe Piazzi in 1801.

The cerium analogue of Ferricerite-(LaCa). Apparently the OH analogue of taipingite-(CeCa).
Isostructural with phosphates of the Whitlockite Subgroup.
A possible Mn analogue is mentioned by Holtstam et al. (2020).
Compare other possible analogues: UM2007-38-SiO:ClFFeHMgREE and UM2007-39-SiO:ClFHMgREE.
