Named by Yu.M. Dymkov, T.I. Loseva, E.N. Zavyalov, B.I. Ryzhov, and L.I. Bocheck in 1982 in honor of the Moskovskiy Geologorazvedochniy Institut, MGRI (in Russian: Московский Геологоразведочный Институт, МГРИ, which may be translated as Geological survey institute of Moscow), the institute where the mineral was discovered. The institute is now named the Russian State Geological Prospecting University.
