Baden-Württemberg is a federal state in south-western Germany, covering approximately 35,800 km². It is bordered by France to the west, Switzerland to the south, Austria to the southeast, and the German states of Bavaria, Hesse, and Rhineland-Palatinate. The region’s geography is highly varied, ranging from the lowlands of the Upper Rhine Graben to upland plateaus and mountain ranges such as the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) and the Swabian Alb. Major rivers include the Rhine, Neckar, Danube, and Upper Iller, making the state an important European watershed.

Geologically, Baden-Württemberg spans several major geological provinces. The Upper Rhine Graben is a Cenozoic rift basin filled with young sediments and flanked by fault-bounded uplands. East of the Rhine Graben, the Black Forest exposes ancient Precambrian and Palaeozoic crystalline basement rocks, including granites and gneisses formed during the Variscan (Hercynian) orogeny. The Swabian Alb is a prominent cuesta landscape formed from Jurassic limestones and marls, which dip gently to the southeast and are deeply incised by river valleys. Parts of eastern Baden-Württemberg extend into the South German Scarplands, composed mainly of Triassic sedimentary rocks of the Germanic Basin.

This geological diversity has supported a notable mineral and extractive heritage. Quarrying has been particularly important, with widespread extraction of limestone from the Swabian Alb for cement, aggregates, and building stone, and sandstone and granite from the Black Forest used in architecture and infrastructure. Historic mining included silver, lead, zinc, and iron ores, especially in the Black Forest during medieval and early modern times, while salt extraction has been significant in parts of the region associated with evaporite sequences. Although most metal mining has ceased, quarrying and industrial mineral extraction remain economically important.

Administratively, Baden-Württemberg is divided into four governmental regions (Regierungsbezirke)—Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Freiburg, and Tübingen—which are further subdivided into 35 districts (Landkreise) and 9 independent cities (Stadtkreise). The state capital is Stuttgart, a major economic and cultural centre. Baden-Württemberg has a strong regional identity shaped by its diverse landscapes, historic regions such as Baden and Württemberg, and a long tradition of industry, craftsmanship, and land use closely tied to its underlying geology.
