About ParatacamiteHide

Formula:
Cu3(Cu,Zn)(OH)6Cl2
Colour:
Green to greenish-black.
Lustre:
Vitreous
Hardness:
3
Specific Gravity:
3.72 - 3.74
Crystal System:
Trigonal
Member of:
Name:
Named for its relationship to atacamite.
Atacamite Group.
A secondary copper mineral. Easily confused with the closely related Clinoatacamite.

Derivatives are paratacamite-(Mg) and paratacamite-(Ni).

Also closely related to Herbertsmithite and Gillardite (both have halved a-axes by comparison to paratacamite).
On heating paratacamite reversibly transforms into herbertsmithite between 353 and 393 K (Welch et al., 2014).

Paratacamite contains essential zinc; therefore it is not a polymorph of atacamite.

"Ni-bearing paratacamite": compare Gillardite.

Optical Data of ParatacamiteHide

Type:
Uniaxial (-)
RI values:
nω = 1.833 - 1.837 nε = 1.826 - 1.830
Max. Birefringence:
δ = 0.007
Based on recorded range of RI values above.

Interference Colours:
The colours simulate birefringence patterns seen in thin section under crossed polars. They do not take into account mineral colouration or opacity.

Michel-Levy Bar The default colours simulate the birefringence range for a 30 µm thin-section thickness. Adjust the slider to simulate a different thickness.

Grain Simulation You can rotate the grain simulation to show how this range might look as you rotated a sample under crossed polars. Each grain retains its interference colour (retardation) while its brightness falls to black at extinction and reaches a maximum between extinction positions.

Surface Relief:
Moderate
Pleochroism:
Weak
Comments:
O > E; green to blue-green
Comments:
