About Melanite
Formula:
Ca3Fe3+2(SiO4)3
Colour:
Black
Name:
Named in 1799 by Abraham Gottlob Werner from the Greek μελανός ("melanos") for "black".
A black Ti-bearing (up to 11.5 mass% TiO2, but usually <~5 mass%) variety of Andradite.
There are probably solid solution series to schorlomite [Ca3Ti2(SiO4)(Fe3+O4)2] and morimotoite [Ca3(TiFe2+)(SiO4)3], but note widely different formulae despite both being similar chemistry! Some Fe2+ may also substitute for Ca.
Note there are also additional substitutions involving Al, Mg, Mn and vacancies in the T-site (with OH for O charge balance).
Visit gemdat.org for gemological information about Melanite.
