Named in 1873 by Charles Friedel in honor of Gabriel Delafosse [February 24, 1796 St. Quentin, France - October 13, 1878] Paris, France, French mineralogist noted for making advances in understanding crystal chemistry and establishing a distinction between empirical and molecular formulas.
A not too uncommon member of the Delafossite Group.
Often associated with cuprite, copper and limonite.
Various synthetic analogues are known (Köhler & Jansen, 1986).
