Named in 1874 by Christian Wilhelm Blomstrand in allusion to the composition comprised of MANGANese and Oxygen.
Occurs in deep green masses. Crystals are extremely rare. The mineral has octahedral parting {111} and somewhat symmetrical development of parting can mimic an octahedron. Cleavages often show a parquet texture.
