Minas Gerais is a large state in southeastern Brazil, covering approximately 586,500 km². Its name, translated into English as “General Mines”, reflects the extraordinary diversity and abundance of its mineral resources. The state is bordered by Bahia to the north and north-east, Goiás and the Federal District to the west, Mato Grosso do Sul to the south-west, São Paulo to the south, Rio de Janeiro to the south-east, and Espírito Santo to the east. The capital is Belo Horizonte, while historically and commercially important mining centres include Ouro Preto, Diamantina, Nova Lima, and Governador Valadares.

Geographically, Minas Gerais occupies a large part of the Brazilian Highlands, with a landscape dominated by dissected plateaux, mountain ranges, and deeply incised river systems. Major physiographic features include the Serra do Espinhaço, running north–south through the state, the Serra da Mantiqueira along the southern border, and the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (Iron Quadrangle) in the south-central region. The state is a major watershed, with rivers draining toward the São Francisco, Paraná, and Atlantic coastal basins. Climate is largely tropical, moderated by altitude.

Geologically, Minas Gerais is one of the most important regions in South America. Much of the state is underlain by Archaean and Proterozoic crystalline basement of the São Francisco Craton and adjacent mobile belts. These include greenstone belts, gneisses, and granitic complexes. The Quadrilátero Ferrífero exposes classic banded iron formations (BIFs) of the Itabira Group, while the Espinhaço Supergroup comprises thick Proterozoic quartzites, sandstones, conglomerates, and phyllites deposited in rift and passive-margin settings. Extensive tropical weathering has produced lateritic profiles and supergene enrichment zones.

From a mineralogical perspective, Minas Gerais encompasses several distinct and prolific geological provinces, each producing characteristic mineral assemblages. The north-eastern and eastern parts of the state, particularly around Governador Valadares, are world-famous for granitic pegmatites, which have produced outstanding specimens of tourmaline, beryl (including aquamarine), quartz, spodumene, lepidolite, and many phosphate minerals. These pegmatites are among the most important gem and specimen-producing localities globally.

In the north-western part of the state, extensive sandstone formations host prolific quartz crystal deposits, distinct in habit and appearance from pegmatitic quartz. These deposits have yielded abundant rock crystal and related varieties and are centred commercially around the town of Corinto, though numerous smaller towns in the region are associated with quartz-producing localities. Nearby lies the historic city of Diamantina, which for nearly two centuries was the centre of diamond and gold production in Brazil.

The southern part of Minas Gerais, especially within the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, forms one of the world’s great iron mining regions. It has produced vast quantities of iron ore and is renowned among collectors for spectacular crystalline hematite, as well as massive lapidary-grade material. Although modern operations focus on bulk production, historically this region yielded some of the finest hematite specimens known. Around Ouro Preto (“Black Gold”), the site of Brazil’s historic School of Mines, collectors can still find specimens of Imperial Topaz from nearby deposits. The Nova Lima gold district, near Belo Horizonte, is famous for its classic specimens of siderite, pink apatite, and associated gold-bearing mineral assemblages.

Historically, Minas Gerais played a central role in Brazil’s colonial development following the discovery of gold and diamonds in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Mining wealth drove rapid settlement, the growth of baroque colonial towns, and the establishment of Brazil’s early scientific institutions. Mining has continued into the modern era and remains a cornerstone of the state’s economy, alongside agriculture and industry.

Administratively, Minas Gerais is divided into numerous municipalities and statistical regions. Owing to its exceptional geological diversity—ranging from ancient cratonic basement and Proterozoic sedimentary basins to world-class pegmatites, iron formations, and gemstone districts—Minas Gerais fully lives up to its name and remains one of the most important regions globally for mineralogy, economic geology, and the study of Precambrian Earth history.

Oxy-schorl
Formula: Na(Fe2+2Al)Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3O
Colour: medium to deep greenish-blue in thin section; presumably black or near black in bulk hand sample.
Description: In thin section, occurs as pleochroic greenish-blue masses with tavorite, triphylite and other phosphates. Analyzed by EPMA; B estimated from stoichiometry. Permissible Fe3+/∑Fe ranges from 0.000 to 0.115 (i.e. "Z"-site oxygen from 0.45 to maximum 1.00 apfu). Sufficient Al is already present in the "D"-site that any estimated Fe3+/∑Fe value between 0.03 and 0.115 yields "Z"-site oxygen > 0.50 apfu, corresponding to an oxy-schorl composition. Note that "Z"-site and "D"-site are mindat-specific site designations.

'Planerite-Turquoise Series'
Description: Originally reported to be coeruleolactite. All purported coeruleolactite examined by the authors of the 1998 report (Foord, E.E. & Taggart, J.E.) were largely Planerite, or Occasionally turquoise. Published analysis indicates that the vacany in the 'A' site is between 0.51-0.54 atom fraction, the balance in Cu-0.40 and Zn-0.06 to 0.09. It is suggested by this analysis that the turquoise structure likely cannot accomodate Ca in the 'A' site.
