Granite pegmatite located on a small island in the Jequitinhonha River, 3 km north of Taquaral.

Cassedanne & Philippo (2015):

This deposit, discovered in 1969 (Lúcio, 1970) occurs on an island 500 meters long in the middle of the Rio Jequitinhonha. Coordinates: x = 194.5 y = 8157.5 Itaobim map. It corresponds to a zoned pegmatite, in part covered by the alluvium, in a N 40° East direction, subvertical, perhaps 300 meters long (some outcrops lost in the sand probably marked it out) and encased in quartzose mica schists. It was worked by an excavation of about 70 x 10 meters, more than 15 deep and filled up with the sands of each annual rise, before it was surrendered about thirty years ago. A small production was previously obtained during the low water levels, after clearing out the sand which filled the excavation. The core of quartz is surrounded by two feldspathic zones in medium grain with albitic substitution bodies, geodes-rich. With the rose quartz there was noticed : muscovite in diamond-shaped pale yellow green crystals, sphalerite in grey tetrahedron flattened dendrites, niobo-tantalite, cassiterite, and stony beryl with numerous phosphates; often gem amblygonite, eosphorite, zanazziite, rockbridgeite, montgomeryite, wardite, whiteite, collinsite, apatite and vivianite deriving from the triphylite weathering and supplying numerous specimens for collections. The rose quartz which belongs to a late stage of the pegmatite development varies from a nearly purple pink to pale-pink-white, being transparent, translucent, or opaque. The individual crystal size varies from some millimeters to 2 centimeters with one or two complete terminations. The specimens are in irregular crust on the matrix, generally quartz, in striped or parallel aggregates, or form a crown of doubly-terminated individuals surrounding quartz crystals which diameter can be up to one decimeter. Some hyalite fluorescent opal, pyrite, a dust of quartz or of iron and / or manganese oxides covers some samples. The omnipresence of eosphorite crystals, often associated with some zanazziite, wardite or apatite, allows the easy determination of the specimens' origin (Cassedanne and Cassedanne, 1973).
