About AlurgiteHide

Formula:
K(Al,Mn3+)2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2
Colour:
Purple, reddish
Name introduced by Breithaupt in 1865 and characterized by Penfield in 1893 (vide Knurr and Bailey, 1986). Placed by W. T. Schaller (1950) as an intermediate between leucophyllite (now a synonym of aluminoceladonite) and muscovite. A study of Knurr and Bailey (1986) showed that alurgite, treated as Mn-bearing muscovite-2M1, contains trivalent manganese (in contrast to "manganophyllite" that contains divalent Mn).

Visually indistinguishable from Mn-bearing phlogopite.
