From the Greek for "carrying down," in allusion to its volcanic origin

This mineral was defined as katophorite in the 1978 and 1997 amphibole nomenclatures. The katophorite group minerals was redefined in the 2012 amphibole nomenclature and the Fe2+ and Al dominant katophorite group mineral is now named ferro-katophorite.
