Named in honour of Dr Shoji Arai, Kanazawa University professor, for his prolific research on the petrology and mineralogy of ophiolites and mantle peridotites. Professor Arai earned his doctorate in geology at Tokyo University, and is a past president of the Japanese Association of Mineralogists, Petrologists and Economic Geologists.
