About Ferri-katophoriteHide

Formula:
Na(CaNa)(Mg4Fe3+)(AlSi7O22)(OH)2
The katophorite group minerals are sodium-calcium amphiboles defined with A(Na+K+2Ca)> 0.5 apfu and 0.5 apfu < C(Al+Fe3++2Ti) < 1.5 apfu.

Ferri-katophorite is defined with

A position: Na dominant
C2+ position: Mg dominant
C3+ position: Fe dominant
W position: (OH) dominant
Crystal System:
Monoclinic
The kataphorite group species with Mg and Fe3+>Al in the C position was named magnesio-ferrikatophorite in the 1978 and 1997 amphibole nomenclatures. The katophorite group minerals were redefined in the 2012 amphibole nomenclature, renaming the Mg, Fe3+ and (OH) dominant member of the group ferri-katophorite.

Compare the chemically similar magnesio-arfvedsonite.

Optical Data of Ferri-katophoriteHide

Type:
Biaxial (-)
RI values:
nα = 1.64 - 1.681 nβ = 1.658 - 1.688 nγ = 1.66 - 1.692
2V:
Calculated: 36° to 72°
Max. Birefringence:
δ = 0.011 - 0.020
Based on recorded range of RI values above.

Interference Colours:
The colours simulate birefringence patterns seen in thin section under crossed polars. They do not take into account mineral colouration or opacity.

Michel-Levy Bar The default colours simulate the birefringence range for a 30 µm thin-section thickness. Adjust the slider to simulate a different thickness.

Grain Simulation You can rotate the grain simulation to show how this range might look as you rotated a sample under crossed polars. Each grain retains its interference colour (retardation) while its brightness falls to black at extinction and reaches a maximum between extinction positions.

Surface Relief:
Moderate
Dispersion:
r < v strong
