About Magnesio-hastingsiteHide

Formula:
NaCa2(Mg4Fe3+)(Si6Al2)O22(OH)2
Colour:
Green to brownish-green
Lustre:
Vitreous
Hardness:
5 - 6
Crystal System:
Monoclinic
Name:
For its relationship to Hastingsite
The hastingsite-group minerals are defined with 0.5 < A(Na+K+2Ca)<1.5 where Na or K is dominant and with the C position occupied by Mg or Fe2+ as dominant divalent ions and 0.5 < C(Al+Fe3+ +Cr+2Ti) < 1.5 where Fe3+ is dominant. W may contain (OH), F or Cl.

Magnesio-hastingsite is defined with:

A position: Na dominant
C position: Mg dominant divalent ion
W position: (OH) dominant

Magnesio-hastingsite is the Fe3+ analogue of pargasite.

Optical Data of Magnesio-hastingsiteHide

Type:
Biaxial (-)
RI values:
nα = 1.653 - 1.67 nβ = 1.661 - 1.69 nγ = 1.669 - 1.7
2V:
Measured: 60° to 90°, Calculated: 68° to 88°
Max. Birefringence:
δ = 0.016 - 0.030
Based on recorded range of RI values above.

Interference Colours:
The colours simulate birefringence patterns seen in thin section under crossed polars. They do not take into account mineral colouration or opacity.

Michel-Levy Bar The default colours simulate the birefringence range for a 30 µm thin-section thickness. Adjust the slider to simulate a different thickness.

Grain Simulation You can rotate the grain simulation to show how this range might look as you rotated a sample under crossed polars. Each grain retains its interference colour (retardation) while its brightness falls to black at extinction and reaches a maximum between extinction positions.

Surface Relief:
Moderate
Dispersion:
weak
