Named after Winand Carel Hugo Staring (5 October 1808, Wildenborch, Netherlands – 4 June 1877, Klein Dochteren, Netherlands), the founder of geology in the Netherlands, a soil scientist, a pioneer in agricultural science, and an advocate for educational reform. He also demonstrated new insights into forestry.
