Name:
Named by W.C. Brögger in 1890 in honor of Thorstein Hallager Hiortdahl (04 May 1839, Bergen, Norway - 29 October 1925, Oslo, Norway), chemist, mineralogist, crystallographer, and politician.
A sorosilicate mineral belonging to the Wöhlerite Group with crystal structure containing two topologically independent ochtahedral walls.

Originally reported by Brøgger (1888, 1890) from "Mittel-Arø", Langesundsfjorden, Norway. He referred to a 10 cm wide nepheline-syenite pegmatite dike at Langodden, Arøyskjærene, Langesundsfjorden.

Merlino & Perchiazzi (1985) determined the crystal structure of hiortdahlite from the Langesundsfjorden area, and designated it as hiortdahlite I, since the structure was slightly different from hiortdahlite from Kipawa River, Canada. The later was designated as hiortdahlite II. Hiorthdahlite II was not never formally submitted to IMA. Newer investigations is needed to establish if hiorthdahlite II is a polytype or a distinct species (Dal Bo et al. 2022).

New chemical data and crystal refinement on a sample from the type locality was presented by Dal Bo et al. (2022) and a new end-member formula with one cationic site characterised by a valancy-imposed double-site occupancy ((Ca2+0.5Zr4+0.5Σ3+)) on the X7-site was approved by IMA-CNMNC in 2020.

Optical Data of HiortdahliteHide

Type:
Biaxial (+)
RI values:
nα = 1.639 - 1.658 nβ = 1.643 - 1.664 nγ = 1.646 - 1.671
2V:
Measured: 80° , Calculated: 80° to 86°
Max. Birefringence:
δ = 0.007 - 0.013
Based on recorded range of RI values above.

Interference Colours:
The colours simulate birefringence patterns seen in thin section under crossed polars. They do not take into account mineral colouration or opacity.

Michel-Levy Bar The default colours simulate the birefringence range for a 30 µm thin-section thickness. Adjust the slider to simulate a different thickness.

Grain Simulation You can rotate the grain simulation to show how this range might look as you rotated a sample under crossed polars. Each grain retains its interference colour (retardation) while its brightness falls to black at extinction and reaches a maximum between extinction positions.

Surface Relief:
Moderate
Dispersion:
r < v strong
Comments:
X = nearly colorless, Y = bright yellow, Z = wine-yellow
