Named after the Saami (Саами in Cyrillic) indigenous people who inhabit parts of the Kola Peninsula of Russia, far northern Norway, Sweden, and Finland.
Chemically and topologically related to kazanskyite, nechelyustovite and bornemanite. Also chemically similar to bykovaite and tazzoliite.
Not to be confused with Saamite (of Volkova & Melentiev).
Group-III TS-block Ti-disilicate, that is, contains TS block built of HOH layers (H = heteropolyhedral layer, O = octahedral layer), and Ti+Nb+Mg = 3 apfu.
Crystal structure details:
The O sheet: Na- and Ti-dominant octahedra, Na3Ti ideal composition.
H sheets: with disilicate groups link to polyhedra with (1) [5]Ti and (2)[6]Nb.
Two peripheral sites: (1) [10]AP(1), (Ba,Sr,K), 94% occupancy, and (2) [8]AP(2), Ca, 26% occupancy.
Adjacent TS blocks connect via (1) hydrogen bonds, water-water and H2O–O (2) via a layer of Ba atoms that form the I (intermediate) block.
