Named by Ciobanu et al. (2024) for geologist Dr. Kathy Ehrig, chief geologist and metallurgist for Broken Hill Proprietary's Olympic Dam operation. Dr. Ehrig is world-renowned for her expertise in geometallurgy and has received numerous international accolades in recognition of her work.
Chemically closely related to hedleyite, Bi7Te3.

Relatively common; reported several times in the literature prior to IMA approval (see Ciobanu et al., 2024).
