Virginia is a state in the eastern United States, located along the Atlantic seaboard and bordered by Maryland and Washington, D.C. to the north, North Carolina and Tennessee to the south, Kentucky and West Virginia to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Its geography is notably diverse and is traditionally divided into several physiographic regions that run roughly parallel to the coast. These include the Coastal Plain (Tidewater), the Piedmont, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Valley and Ridge, and the Appalachian Plateau in the far southwest. Major river systems such as the Potomac, Rappahannock, James, and Roanoke flow eastward to the Chesapeake Bay, shaping settlement patterns, agriculture, and early trade.

Geologically, Virginia spans a wide range of Earth history, from ancient crystalline rocks more than a billion years old to relatively young coastal sediments. The Blue Ridge and Piedmont are underlain by Precambrian and early Palaeozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks formed during multiple mountain-building events, including the Taconic, Acadian, and Alleghanian orogenies associated with the formation of the Appalachian Mountains. West of the Blue Ridge, folded and faulted sedimentary rocks of the Valley and Ridge province record long periods of shallow marine deposition, while the Appalachian Plateau contains relatively flat-lying Carboniferous strata. To the east, the Coastal Plain consists of unconsolidated sands, clays, and gravels deposited as sea levels rose and fell along the Atlantic margin.

Virginia’s mineral and extractive heritage reflects this geological diversity and played an important role in both colonial and industrial development. Coal mining has been especially significant in southwestern Virginia, forming part of the central Appalachian coalfield, while iron ores were historically worked in the Valley and Ridge and Piedmont regions from the colonial period onward. Other extractive industries have included limestone and dolomite quarrying for cement and agriculture, crushed stone and aggregate for construction, sand and gravel from coastal and riverine deposits, and small-scale mining of metals such as copper, lead, and zinc. Dimension stone, including granite, sandstone, and marble, has also been quarried and used widely in regional architecture.

Politically and administratively, Virginia is divided into a distinctive system of counties and independent cities, with 95 counties and 38 cities that are legally separate from county governments. This structure is unusual within the United States and has deep historical roots. At the state level, Virginia is governed under a constitution with executive, legislative, and judicial branches, and it is further subdivided into planning districts and congressional districts for administrative and electoral purposes. Often referred to as the “Commonwealth of Virginia,” the state’s political geography reflects both its early colonial origins and its continued influence on the development of governance in the United States.
