About TravertineHide

Name:
Named in the mid 17th century: from Italian travertino, tivertino, from Latin tiburtinus ‘of Tibur’ (now Tivoli, a district near Rome).
A limestone consisting of a massive, usually layered, calcium carbonate (such as aragonite or calcite) formed by deposition from non-marine waters, especially from hot springs, or from cold water in caves. Compare with tufa. It can be massive,porous or have a fibrous or banded appearance and exists in white, tan, cream-colored, and rusty colours.

In the broadest sense, travertine includes varied carbonate deposits in both hot and cold springs, the latter including the porous, spongy rock known as tufa, and also the more crystalline cave features known as speleothems (which include stalactites and stalagmites). Travertine is also often defined in a more narrow sense as dense rock, sometimes massive but more commonly banded or with a fibrous internal structure, deposited in hot springs.
