About RipidoliteHide

Formula:
(Mg,Fe,Al)6(Si,Al)4O10(OH)8
Name:
Named from the Greek 'ριπιδοζ', meaning 'a fan' for its habit.
Originally a ferroan variety of Clinochlore described from Akhmatovskaya Kop (Achmatovsk Mine), Nazyamskiye Mt, Zlatoust, Ilmen Mts, Chelyabinsk Oblast', Urals Region, Russia. Ripidolite has been historically used as a name for intermediate and undetermined members of the chamosite-clinochlore series.

Used by Hey (1954) in his widely used, formal classification of chlorites, for ones with Mg/(Mg+Fe) = 0.25-0.75 and Si = 5.6-6.2 atoms per 8 tetrahedral sites, but now considered a variety, mostly of clinochlore but also chamosite.
