Extremadura is an autonomous community in western Spain, covering approximately 41,600 km² and bordering Portugal to the west and the Spanish autonomous communities of Castile and León, Castile–La Mancha, and Andalusia. It is one of the least densely populated regions of Spain and is characterised by broad plains, rolling hills, and deeply incised river valleys. The major rivers are the Tagus (Tajo) and Guadiana, both of which flow westward into Portugal and have strongly influenced settlement, agriculture, and landscape development. The regional capital is Mérida, while Badajoz and Cáceres are major urban centres.
Geologically, Extremadura lies largely within the Iberian Massif, a major Palaeozoic basement complex formed during the Variscan orogeny. The region is dominated by Precambrian and Palaeozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks, including slates, schists, quartzites, granites, and gneisses, which form extensive uplands and ridges. These are interspersed with sedimentary basins and younger cover rocks, particularly in the south. Prominent quartzite ridges give rise to linear mountain chains such as the Sierra de San Pedro and Sierra de Guadalupe, while granitic intrusions are widespread and play an important role in local geomorphology.
Extremadura has a long and significant mineral and mining heritage. The region was an important mining area in Roman times, particularly for gold, extracted using large-scale hydraulic methods, most famously at Las Médulas in the north (just beyond the modern regional boundary) and at several sites within Extremadura itself. Historically and more recently, the region has produced iron, lead, zinc, copper, and tin, as well as industrial minerals such as quartz, feldspar, and building stone. Extremadura is also notable in the modern context for its lithium-bearing pegmatites, which have attracted significant attention in connection with Europe’s critical raw materials supply, particularly around the Cáceres area.
Administratively, Extremadura is divided into two provinces: Cáceres and Badajoz. The region has a strong cultural identity shaped by its rural character, historical isolation, and extensive traditional land-use systems such as the dehesa, a landscape of open woodland and pasture developed on poor, stony soils. Extremadura’s geology has strongly influenced its low population density, agricultural practices, and long-standing association with mining, making it an important region for understanding the interaction between the Iberian Massif, mineral resources, and human history in western Spain.
