Named by S.A. Kissin, D.R. Owens, and W.L. Roberts in 1978 in honor of Dr. Petr Černý (8 January 1934, Brno, Czechoslovakia - 7 April 2018, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada), Professor of Geology at the University of Manitoba, Canada, and an expert in the mineralogy of pegmatites. He discovered the mineral at the Tanco Mine. Pronounced CHÄRNĪ·AIT.
