A tantalum-lithium-cesium mine in the Tanco pegmatite. Owned by The Tantalum Mining Corp. of Canada (TANCO).
Discovered 1930 with minor production of tin and beryl, opened 1954-1960 (for lithium, beryl, and minor decorative quartz). Reopened 1967 and closed 1982 (worked for tantalum and caesium). Workings went to at least the 280 foot (85 meters) level.
The Tanco pegmatite is a highly differentiated, strongly zoned pegmatite. It is one of the oldest known complex pegmatites, at 2.67 billion years.
The Lower Tanco Pegmatite is a satellite pegmatite below the main Tanco Pegmatite that has a distinctive suite of Ta-oxide minerals (Cerny and Ercit (1985)).
Cabot Corporation bought the mine in 1993, and began the production of caesium brine from pollucite in 1996. Subsequently, the Tanco Mine was purchased by Sinomine in June 2019. Sinomine paid $135 million with an additional 10-year lithium royalty consideration. Tax impact was unexpected.
The pollucite (chemical formula (Cs,Na)2Al2Si4O12·2H2O) deposit associated with the pegmatite is the largest known deposit of this mineral and with 350,000 tons, it accounts for two thirds of the known resources. With an estimated average global use of 30,000 kg/year, the reserves of the mine would last for 2,000 to 3,000 years. The mined pollucite contains approximately 24% Cs2O. The orebody is 1,400 m long, 600 m wide and 100 m deep. For several decades, the pegmatites at Bernic Lake have supplied the world with the needed caesium.
The Tanco pegmatite itself is a sub-horizontal body of approximately 2 by 1 km of known lateral extent and a thickness of up to 100 m. Nine zones have been defined based on mineral composition, texture, and location: the border zone, the wall zone, the aplitic albite zone, the lower intermediate zone, the upper intermediate zone, the central intermediate zone, the quartz zone, the pollucite zone, and the lepidolite zone.
The pegmatite was first explored for cassiterite in the late 1920s.
Later it was mined for lithium (spodumene).
Located at Bernic Lake in the southeastern Manitoba pegmatite district.
