Santa Marta is a municipality in the Spanish province of Badajoz, in the autonomous community of Extremadura.
The vanadium, lead, and zinc mines of the Santa Marta de los Barros mining district were an important source of vanadium supply at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, and their lead, silver, and zinc ores were subsequently exploited until the definitive closure of the district in 1929.
The main mines of the Santa Marta mining district are located in two different places in the northeast area of the town and are concentrated in two adjacent geographical areas: Los Llanos and Las Colmenitas (these names do not correspond to mine names but to geographical areas).
In the Los Llanos area are located the "La Constante" and "Maria Luisa" mines, as well as the main shaft of the "Reserva" mine. The area of Las Colmenitas, north of Los Llanos, is where the rest of the works of the "Reserva" mine are located (shaft #2 to #6).
Outside these two areas, but still in the mining district of Santa Marta, is the La Vanadina mine.
These mines have yielded excellent specimens of vanadinite and are the type locality for calderónite, a mineral discovered for the first time in the "Reserva" mine.
The Santa Marta lead-zinc deposits fit into the medium-high grade Precambrian formation of metamorphism. The hydrothermal (mesothermal) veins are related to the late Hercynian fracturing period and are genetically connected to the Santa Marta stock.
