Zimbabwe (named as such from 1980 onwards) was formerly called Southern Rhodesia (1901-1965), Rhodesia (1965-1979), Zimbabwe Rhodesia (1979) and again Southern Rhodesia (1979-1980).

For Northern Rhodesia, see Zambia.

The Great Dyke is an area of mafic and ultramafic rocks that is 4-11 km wide and 550 km long. It contains significant resources of platinum group elements. It stretches from the Mimosa mine to the Snake's Head area.

Crystals also typically exhibit mild red fluorescence under LW UV, due to the presence of trivalent chromium substitutions in place of aluminum.
