About FelsiteHide

A field term for any light-colored, fine-grained or aphanitic extrusive or hypabyssal rock, with or without phenocrysts, and composed chiefly of quartz and feldspar; generally microcrystalline rocks of granitic composition.

The term was initially used for the microcrystalline groundmass of a porphyry.

The name had also previously been used by Kirwan (1794) for a microcrystalline variety of feldspar.
