Epidiorite

Epidiorite is a term used for any metamorphosed medium- to coarse-grained basic igneous rock (originally dolerite or gabbro), where the pyroxenes have been altered to amphiboles.

Originally defined as epidiorite (of Gümbel) and also epidiorite (of Rosenbusch) as rocks retaining an igneous texture but with uralitised pyroxenes. These rocks are preferably called metadolerite, metagabbro, etc.

Epidiorite (of Wiseman) is a broader definition by British petrologist John Dugdale Holt Wiseman (1934) from a study on the metabasic mineral assemblages of the Scottish Dalradian. This definition broadly applies to metamorphosed basic igneous rocks that have undergone progressive regional metamorphism rather than simple localized uralitization as in the original definition of epidiorite (of Gümbel), and includes amphibolites and mafic schists. These may have lost all original igneous textures.

The terms are best avoided.
