Bangong–Nujiang metallogenic belt

The Gangdese porphyry copper belt is located parallel to the Indus-Yarlung Zangbo suture, extending approximately 750 km across the southern part of the Lhasa terrane in southern Tibet. The belt lies within ∼ 100 km north of the suture, bounded to the north by the Shiquan River–Nam Tso mélange zone and to the south by the Luobadui-Milashan Fault. The tectonic evolution is marked by the northward subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean beneath the Lhasa terrane from the Late Triassic to the Late Cretaceous, which triggered the emplacement of the Gangdese batholith between 210 and 60 Ma.
The Gangdese magmatic belt is primarily known for its porphyry-type, skarn-type, and epithermal deposits, which are widely considered products of post-collisional tectonics at 17–13 Ma. It is recognized as one of the richest Cu provinces within the Tethyan-Himalayan metallogenic domain, hosting some of China’s largest porphyry Cu deposits. Porphyry deposits are mainly characterized by Cu and Cu-Mo combinations, with fewer Cu-Au combinations. Five distinct phases of mineralization have been identified: ~213 Ma (Luerma), 173–165 Ma (Xiongcun), ~45 Ma (Jiru), ~30 Ma (Mingze-Chengba), and 17–13 Ma (Qulong, Jiama, Zhuno). Notably, these deposits are primarily concentrated in the eastern segment of the Gangdese belt, with the distribution of mineralization elements transitioning from Mo-Cu-Pb-Zn in the north to Cu-Mo and finally to Cu-W-Mo in the south.
Located in the southern Lhasa terrane. The GMB is characterized by three major types of ore deposits, which include porphyry Cu-Au-Mo, skarn Fe-Cu, and Pb-Zn deposits. The Miocene was a major metallogenic period of porphyry-type copper polymetallic deposits in the middle-eastern GMB, and numerous Miocene large-scale deposits have been discovered, including the Qulong (∼16.13 Ma), Jiama (14.66–15.37 Ma), Zhunuo (13.72 Ma), Lakange (∼13.12), Tinggong (∼15.49 Ma) and Chongjiang deposits (∼14 Ma).
The Gangdese porphyry Cu belt (GPCB), located in the eastern Tethyan metallogenic domain, has metal resources of Cu > 25 million tons (Mt), Mo > 1.2 Mt, and Au > 200 t.
The Gangdese metallogenic belt can be divided into three sub-belts—northern, central, and southern—based on distinct ore metal assemblages and spatial distribution. Previous studies indicate that the northern sub-belt (NG) is dominated by hydrothermal vein-type, skarn-type, and porphyry-type deposits, forming a Pb-Zn-Ag polymetallic metallogenic sub-belt. Representative deposits include the Mengya’a skarn Pb-Zn-Ag deposit, the Yaguila skarn–porphyry Pb-Zn-Mo deposit, the Dongzhongsongduo skarn Pb-Zn deposit, and the Sharang porphyry Mo deposit. The central sub-belt (MG) is dominated by porphyry Cu-Mo polymetallic deposits and represents the largest mineralization concentration area within the Tibetan Plateau orogenic belt. The deposits are mainly medium to large in scale, with representative examples including the Zhunuo, Chongjiang, and Tinggong Cu deposits. The southern sub-belt (SG) hosts porphyry–skarn Cu-W-Mo polymetallic deposits, with larger ones including the Nuri Cu-W-Mo deposit, the Mingze Mo deposit, the Kelu Cu-Au deposit, the Chongmuda Cu-Au deposit, and the Chenba Cu-Au deposit. Furthermore, a pronounced north–south spatial zonation in mineralization element assemblages is evident, displaying a trend from Fe(Cu) in the north, through Pb-Zn(Ag-Mo) and Cu-Mo, to W-Mo(Cu) and Cu-Au in the south. This distinctive zoning pattern of ore-forming elements is closely related to the multi-stage tectonic, magmatic, and metallogenic evolution of the region.
