Over 15 gold lodes have been verified at Shangxu. The ore bodies are generated by occurrences similar to those in strata and thrusts striking NWW and dipping at 48°–85° to the south, with lengths of > 54–1000 m, thicknesses of 1.3–4.5 m, extending to depths of > 70–160 m, varying in grades of 1–30 g/t with average grades of 2–15.5 g/t. Mineralization is developed as massive to laminated quartz veins, saddle reefs, breccias and disseminated sulfides, hosted by brecciated quartz and mixed clay-rich breccia matrix, which change outwards into intensively deformed and sheared wall rocks.
Hydrothermal fluids recorded three main stages based on mineral paragenesis. The earliest was a pre-ore barren quartz stage (H1). The basin sediment-sourced methane-bearing fluid led to early barren quartz veins and siderite alteration. After that, it was a gold mineralization stage (H2), which was constituted of a quartz–pyrite sub-stage (H2a) and a quartz–pyrite–sulfides sub-stage (H2b). The H2a sub-stage produced massive quartz veins with euhedral pyrite and gold. The following H2b sub-stage generated abundant quartz, granular pyrite, muscovite with minor chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite and gold. The hydrothermal activity ended up with a carbonate–sulfide stage (H3), which was composed of an ankerite–sulfide sub-stage (H3a) and a calcite–sulfide sub-stage (H3b). The H3a sub-stage is distinguished by abundant ankerite, muscovite, sulfides with minor quartz and chlorite. The calcite–sulfide stage (H3b) is characterized by calcite, sulfides, with minor quartz and chlorite.
