S-type granite

Granitoid rocks derived from sedimentary source rocks, usually peraluminous, with muscovite and Al-rich minerals like garnet, cordierite and andalusite.

S-type is Sedimentary or Supracrustal; contrast with I-type granite, originating from remelting of deeper seated mafic igneous rocks. They can intergrade if originating from mixed sources.

Relatively low sodium, Na2O normally <3.2% in rocks with approx. 5% K2O, decreasing to <2.2% in rocks with approx. 2% K2O
Mol. Al2O3/(Na2O + K2O + CaO) > 1.1
>1.1 CIPW normative corundum
Relatively restricted in composition to high SiO2 types
Variation diagrams more irregular
