Named after Yuri Aleksandrovich Polkanov (Юрий Александрович Полканов) (b. 10 March 1935, Simferopol, USSR), Academician, Institute of Mineral Resources, Academy of Technical Sciences of Ukraine, known for his studies of the mineralogy and ore deposits of the Crimean Peninsula, and particularly of placers.
