Named for George Osborne, Bustee Station, India, who provided the meteorite in which the species was found, in the mid 1800s.
Isostructural with:
A very rare natural nitride, originally formed in star dust and now almost exclusively found in meteorites. The Ti analogue of both carslbergite and uakitite. The only approved Ti-N mineral to date.
Synthetic titanium nitride is a very important high-performance ceramic.
