South Aegean (Notío Aigaío) is an administrative region of Greece located in the southern Aegean Sea, covering approximately 5,300 km² of land area dispersed across a wide maritime zone. The region consists almost entirely of islands and includes two major island groups: the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. It lies east of mainland Greece, west of Turkey, and north of Crete. The administrative capital is Ermoupoli on the island of Syros, while Rhodes is the largest city. Despite its fragmented geography, the South Aegean is one of Greece’s most economically significant regions due to tourism and shipping.

Geographically, the South Aegean is defined by a complex archipelago landscape of mountainous islands, rocky coastlines, volcanic centres, and limited lowland areas. Many islands are steep and rugged, with short drainage systems and limited freshwater resources. The region includes famous volcanic islands such as Santorini (Thera), Nisyros, and Milos, as well as limestone-dominated islands like Rhodes, Kos, and Paros. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, moderated by strong seasonal winds (meltemi).

Geologically, the South Aegean is one of the most active and complex regions in Europe. It lies within the Hellenic volcanic arc, formed by the subduction of the African Plate beneath the Aegean microplate. This tectonic setting has produced widespread Neogene to Quaternary volcanism, intense faulting, and seismicity. The Cyclades expose high-grade metamorphic rocks (schists, gneisses, marbles) belonging to the Cycladic Massif, exhumed during Aegean extension. The Dodecanese islands include Mesozoic carbonate platforms, ophiolitic fragments, and younger volcanic rocks. The eruption of Santorini in the Late Bronze Age is one of the most significant volcanic events in human history and has left thick pumice and ash deposits across the region.

The South Aegean has a notable mineral and extractive heritage, historically focused on industrial minerals rather than metals. Obsidian from Milos was widely traded in the Neolithic Aegean. The region has produced pumice, perlite, bentonite, kaolin, and pozzolanic materials, particularly from Milos and nearby islands, and remains internationally important for some of these commodities. Small-scale occurrences of metallic mineralisation (e.g. iron, manganese, copper) are known but were generally worked only locally. Today, extraction is tightly regulated, especially on islands of high environmental and cultural value.

Historically, the islands of the South Aegean have been central to Aegean civilisation since prehistoric times, including the Cycladic culture, Minoan influence, Classical Greek city-states, and later Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman rule. The Dodecanese remained under Ottoman and then Italian control until being incorporated into modern Greece in 1947, making the region one of the most recent territorial additions to the Greek state.

Administratively, the South Aegean is divided into regional units corresponding broadly to island groups. Its combination of active tectonics, metamorphic core complexes, arc volcanism, and historically important industrial minerals makes the South Aegean a key region for understanding Mediterranean geodynamics, island-arc evolution, and the long interaction between geology, resources, and human settlement in the Aegean world.
