Serifos is a Greek island in the western Cyclades, historically significant for its extensive iron (and lesser copper) ore deposits that have been exploited since prehistoric times and especially during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, driving periods of economic growth and settlement on the island. Mining on Serifos included extensive open-pit and underground workings, rail infrastructure, and export facilities centered around Koutalas and Megalo Livadi, with operations peaking under companies like Serifos-Spiliazeza before declining and ultimately ceasing by the 1960s; the island’s mining heritage includes notable labor struggles, including a major 1916 miners’ strike that contributed to the eventual establishment of the eight-hour workday in Greek mines.

Geologically, Serifos is part of the Cycladic metamorphic belt and is dominated by high-grade metamorphic rocks, mainly marbles, schists, and gneisses, forming a metamorphic core complex exhumed during Miocene extension. The island’s iron ore deposits are chiefly skarn and hydrothermal in origin, formed through the interaction of carbonate host rocks with fluids related to a Miocene granodioritic intrusion exposed in central Serifos, resulting in magnetite- and hematite-rich bodies accompanied by a diverse assemblage of calc-silicate and sulfide minerals.

From a mineral-collecting perspective, Serifos is best known for its aesthetic prase quartz specimens, whose green coloration is caused by inclusions of fibrous actinolite or crossite rather than hedenbergite (Hyrsl & Niedermayr, 2003; Klemme et al., 2018). Amethyst is also found and may occur together with prase, forming striking “half-and-half” crystals composed of both varieties. Ilvaite and andradite are additional species highly valued by collectors.

Unfortunately, intensive and environmentally irresponsible excavations—sometimes carried out on private land and in violation of existing laws and regulations—have led local authorities to prohibit mineral collecting. As a result, illegal collecting is actively monitored, with offenders being prosecuted and, in some cases, facing severe penalties.
