Named in 1967 by Matsuo Nambu and Katsutoshi Tanida in honor of Dr. Manjiro Watanabe (渡辺万次郎) (2 July 1891 Japan - 20 March 1980 Japan), mineralogist, economic geologist and Professor at Tohoku University, Japan.
A restudy of type manjiroite shows that Na is not the dominant tunnel species, but water (Post et al., 2022).

Many manganese oxides are better identified using infra-red spectroscopy than by x-ray diffraction because of issues of crystal size, disorder, etc. (Potter and Rossman, 1979).
