Thiorichia is the greek abbreviated term for "sulfur mines".
The sulfur mines and the associated industrial facilities were abandoned in 1958 after the mine owners declared bankruptcy.
Today, the place is regarded as an important piece of the island's industrial and mining history while it is also a popular tourist attraction.
