Santorini (Thera) is a group of circular islands composed of overlapping shield volcanoes. The prevulcanic basement of Santorini consists of metamorphosed limestone and schist from the Triassic to the Tertiary period formed during the Alpine orogeny around 60 million years ago. These rocks are present in some parts of the island and in particular the highest peak is the Profitis Ilias mountain of 567 meters.
Santorini belongs to the Christiana–Santorini–Kolumbo volcanic field, an active and complex magmatic-hydrothermal system.
The oldest southern volcano was formed about 700,000 years before the present (BP) near Akrotiri, while in 200,000 BP the Peristeria caldera was formed. The caldera of Skaros about 54,000 BP was formed in the middle of the island arc. The whole island appears to be twice the size of the present and had a large central cone. About 23,000 BP the Riva volcano appeared in the north-west of the island which, with violent eruptions, changed the conformation of the island making the large central cone disappear. At 20,000 BP in the middle of the island arc a "Strongili" volcanic island was formed; in 1613 BC the famous historical eruption that shocked the island and its inhabitants originated from it. In this explosion about 60 cubic km of rocks, ash and pumice were released into the air. A layer of about 60 meters of ash covered the entire insular arch.
Currently, the volcanic center is active in the Nea Kameni island.
The rocks that we can observe on the island are metamorphosed limestone, schist, dacite, andesite, basalt, trachyte, rhyolite and various pyroclastic rocks such as pumice and ash.
