East of a line which approximately runs along the Lieser river valley, across Millstatt lake, and down the lower Afritz stream valley, the rocks of the Alpine 'Altkristallin' are covered by Upper Palaeozoic rocks ('Gurktaler Decke'), mainly metavolcanic rocks, phyllites, schists, siliceous schists, marbles and dolomites. The Gurktal Alps form the largest part of this area. Geographically, they consist of the Nock Mts ('Nockberge') in the northwest, the Carinthian (southern) part of the Murrau Mts ('Murrauer Berge') in the northeast, and the Metnitzer Alpen and Wimitz Mts ('Wimitzer Berge') in the east.
