A town founded as a copper, gold, and silver mining town in 1880 and named after Judge Dewitt Bisbee, a financial backer of the area's Copper Queen Mine, the largest claim at the time. Famous copper mining district. The old town was bisected by the Lavender open pit mine and highway 80 runs between the sections, alongside the pit. Old town Bisbee is now a tourist attraction and arts community. The Copper Queen Hotel in the old town is reputedly a haunted building.
New Bisbee is a more recent development S of the old town along highway 92 and the Mexican border. It is the home of the county seat offices.

Onac (2025) mentions chalcophanite, cuprite, plattnerite, tenorite, bromargyrite, azurite, malachite, rosasite, chalcanthite, mimetite, and shattuckite to occur in "Bisbee mine caves".
