Golden Gate claim


A former underground Cu-Pb-Au-Ag occurrence/mine located in the NE¼NE¼ sec. 17, T23S, R24E, about 1 km SSW of old town Bisbee, on land of unknown status.

The Sunrise shaft, also known as the Golden Gate claim was dug to 734 feet (ca. 224 m). Raising started in 1919. The Sunrise was developed by the Copper Queen Company to service the Southwest mine. This shaft was a series of connected raises from the Queen tunnel or 3rd level to its collar at 6,000 feet (ca. 1,829 m) in elevation.

Because the hillside surface it was on was so steep, no conventional headframe hoist system could be used. A four-storied, steel structure was erected over the opening, with the hoist on the top floor situated over the shaft. The cage was the only one in the district large enough to accommodate a mule. The interesting structure still stands on the south facing slopes of Queen Hill. Its periods of operation are the same as those of the Southwest Mine.

On the top floor, parts of the hoist motor are still in place and the insulation used was sheets of muscovite mica.
