Former province of Sardinia (1859-2016).
The Province of Cagliari was founded in 1859, even before the Unification of Italy in 1861, with an area which until 1927 included the entire southern and central sectors of Sardinia.
On January 2, 1927 the former district of Lanusei and 12 municipalities (comuni) of the former district of Oristano (Bosa, Cuglieri, Flussio, Magomadas, Modolo, Montresta, Sagama, Scano di Montiferro, Sennariolo, Suni, Tinnura, and Tresnuraghes) were detached from the province and incorporated into the new Province of Nuoro.
On August 28, 1974 from the province were detached 76 municipalities (Abbasanta, Aidomaggiore, Albagiara, Ales, Allai, Alborea, Ardauli, Assolo, Asuni, Baradili, Baratili San Pietro, Baressa, Bauladu, Bidonì, Bonarcado, Boroneddu, Busachi, Cabras, Curcuris, Fordongianus, Genoni, Ghilarza, Gonnoscodina, Gonnosnò, Gonnostramatza, Laconi, Marrubiu, Masullas, Milis, Mogorella, Mogoro, Morgongiori, Narbolia, Neoneli, Norbello, Nughedu Santa Vittoria, Nurachi, Nureci, Ollastra, Oristano, Palmas Arborea, Pau, Paulilatino, Pompu, Riola Sardo, Ruinas, Samugheo, San Nicolò d'Arcidano, San Vero Milis, Santa Giusta, Santu Lussurgiu, Sedilo, Seneghe, Senis, Siamaggiore, Siamanna, Siapiccia, Simala, Simaxis, Sini, Siris, Soddì, Solarussa, Sorradile, Tadasuni, Terralba, Tramatza, Ulà Tirso, Uras, Usellus, Villa Sant'Antonio, Villa Verde, Villanova Truschedu, Villaurbana, Zeddiani, and Zerfaliu) and incorporated into the new Province of Oristano.
The new provinces of Carbonia-Iglesias and Medio Campidano, which were created on July 12, 2001 and existed de facto between 2005 and 2016, incorporated from the Province of Cagliari 23 municipalities (Buggerru, Calasetta, Carbonia, Carloforte, Domusnovas, Fluminimaggiore, Giba, Gonnesa, Iglesias, Masainas, Musei, Narcao, Nuxis, Perdaxius, Piscinas, Portoscuso, San Giovanni Suergiu, Santadi, Sant'Anna Arresi, Sant'Antioco, Tratalias, Villamassargia, and Villaperuccio) and 28 municipalities (Arbus, Barumini, Collinas, Furtei, Genuri, Gesturi, Gonnosfanadiga, Guspini, Las Plassas, Lunamatrona, Pabillonis, Pauli Arbarei, Samassi, San Gavino Monreale, Sanluri, Sardara, Segariu, Serramanna, Serrenti, Setzu, Siddi, Tuili, Turri, Ussaramanna, Villacidro, Villamar, Villanovaforru, and Villanovafranca), respectively. At the same time from the Province of Nuoro 13 municipalities (Escalaplano, Escolca, Esterzili, Gergei, Isili, Nuragus, Nurallao, Nurri, Orroli, Sadali, Serri, Seulo, and Villanova Tulo) joined the Province of Cagliari.
On February 4, 2016 the city of Cagliari and other 16 municipalities (Assemini, Capoterra, Decimomannu, Elmas, Maracalagonis, Monserrato, Pula, Quartu Sant'Elena, Quartucciu, Sarroch, Selargius, Sestu, Settimo San Pietro, Sinnai, Uta, and Villa San Pietro), formerly belonging to the Province of Cagliari, were incorporated into the Metropolitan City of Cagliari. The Province of Cagliari was dissolved and the remaining 54 municipalities joined the newest Province of South Sardinia.
